Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a cutting edge treatment providing one of the most effective, evidence-based treatments for long-standing, persistent tendon, muscle and soft-tissue injuries to accelerate healing and reduce pain especially within chronic or stubborn injuries.
The term “shockwave” refers to acoustic energy waves that travel through the body to stimulate the healing process within soft-tissue structures. These waves are generated using compressed air and delivered at high speed through a handheld device applied directly to the skin; encouraging blood flow to the injured area, stimulating tissue repair and cell regeneration and reducing pain signals. The application of SWT is a safe, clinical proven and effective treatment used by elite sports professionals and recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

Your 3-Step Treatment Journey

Initial Assessment

Our team will combine expert injury-assessment, hands on treatment and the latest SWT technologies to aid your recovery. It is a safe, effective and non-invasive alternative treatment to other treatments such as corticosteroid injections or surgery, to help stimulate healing, reduce pain and restore movement.

Treatment

A typical course consist of four sessions, spaced 7-10 days apart, following by a 6-week review to assess progress. This review period gives the body time to respond to the therapy and allows the shockwaves to take effect at the pain centres. In some cases, a second course may be recommended for long-term results.

Rehabilitation Plan

SWT is most effective when combined with targeted rehabilitation exercises. For this reason, we include a tailored exercise program as part of your treatment plan to maximise recovery and ensure long term improvement.

FAQs

Is Shockwave Therapy safe?
Yes, Shockwave Therapy is a clinically proven, safe, and non-invasive treatment option for many musculoskeletal conditions. It has NICE guidance for many conditions and is used within the NHS.
How does it work
The shockwaves produced by the machine stimulate blood flow and cellular activity in the affected area, encouraging the body’s natural healing processes.
Is Shockwave Therapy painful?
Due to the nature of Shockwave Therapy, a low-level discomfort is required however we wouldn’t describe this as painful. Your practitioner will monitor your pain levels using a 0-10 scale and will never exceed 6 out of 10 on the pain scale.

Be assured, this discomfort is generally tolerable and brief, and the discomfort felt does not last any longer than the treatment application itself.
